Every Powerful Mercedes AMG Black Series Ever Made

The Dark Pinnacle of AMG performance.

This is what describes the AMG BLACK SERIES when you visit the Mercedes AMG page. These are the most powerful and fastest version of Mercedes AMG cars. Since 2006 the black series name has been used to describe the most bonkers version of AMG cars.

Only 6 cars have had the honor to wear the BLACK SERIES badge.

1. 2007 Mercedes SLK55 AMG Black Series

The Mercedes SLK was originally made as a compact luxury roadster by Mercedes-Benz. It was produced in 1996 and remained in production till 2020. The second generation of the SLK came out between 2004 and 2010 which saw the car receive the Black series treatment. An AMG version was available with obviate making 360 horsepower but the Black series version saw the engine making as much as 400 horsepower.

The car was equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission and could reach 60MPH in 4.5 seconds which is 0.4 seconds faster than regular SLK. The power increase came from a modified intake, high-flow air filter, and a brand new exhaust. A new adjustable suspension was also featured along with 19-inch wheels and a strut bar to provide added rigidity. Visually the SLK Black series had a little bit more carbon fiber and the fenders, a new front bumper, and larger side outlets to provide cooling.

The convertible hardtop was now replaced with a fixed one that helps with reducing the weight of the car. The interior also now had bucket seats and also featured leather and Alcantara as well as visual carbon fiber panels.

2. 2008 Mercedes CLK63 AMG Black Series

The CLK series was first unveiled in 2002 and was produced till 2010. Within that time there were many variants and that included a Black series model. The CLK63 AMG Black series made 500 horsepower from a naturally-aspirated 6.2 liter V8. The car featured a wider body as well as a retuned suspension and lots of carbon fiber. It was 100 pounds lighter than the regular car and weighed in at 3911 pounds. The car could hit 60 in 4.2 seconds and has a top speed of 186 mph. Only 500 of these cars were ever made.

3. 2009 Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series

Their SL name has been used on the Mercedes brand since the 1950s. The Black series version was unveiled in 2008 and went on sale in 2009. AMG shoved one of the biggest engines in its smallest cars, its 6 liter twin-turbo V12 which made 660 horsepower. All the power was sent to the rear wheels via AMG’s speed shift 5-speed automatic transmission. It could hit 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 199 mph.

The car also featured a wider body than standard new alloy wheels and a pronounced fixed rear wing. Only 175 units were reproduced and are by far one of the best-looking SL’s ever made.

4. 2012 Mercedes C63 AMG Black series

The C63 AMG is one of the best performance coupe/sedans on the market. The W204 version from 2012 is considered one of the best modern images of all time. The original C63 went on sale in 2012 and the Black series was introduced in 2013. Other AMG Black series has been launched in normal silver colors but this one was launched in the iconic solarbeam yellow. Unfortunately, customers were never allowed to order the car in this color.

The car had an upgraded version of the 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8 found in the C63 AMG which made 460 HP but in the Black series, it made 510 horsepower. The car could hit 60 mph in 4.2 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph. It had a slightly wider body an obvious fixed rear wing a new carbon-fiber splitter with dive planes on the sides. The only transmission of choice was a 7-speed automatic which sent power to the rear wheels only. AMGs have been known to be tire-shredding monsters and this car was no different but it handled better than the rest. The sound coming from me that beautiful engine could also be enjoyed at any speed because of the upgraded exhaust and less sound insulation.

650 of these cars were planned for production but it was so successful that 800 of them were eventually made.

5. 2014 Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series

The SLS AMG is a spiritual successor to the iconic Mercedes 300sl (gullwing) that was made between 1954 and 1957. The SLS was first introduced in 2012 and made till 2014, and featured a front mid-engine layout. It was the first car that was built by the AMG division from the ground up. The only engine of choice was a 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8 which made 563 horsepower but in the Black series, it made 622HP. The transmission of choice was a quick-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch transmission which was connected to a lightweight carbon-fiber driveshaft that helps speed upshifts.

The SLS could hit 60 in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 196 mph. It was launched in solarbeam yellow just like the C63 black series but this time customers actually had the option to spec their cars in this color. About 300 of these cars were estimated to have been produced. After the production of the SLS Black Series, it took almost another seven years before the next Black series will be produced.

6. 2021 Mercedes AMG GT Black Series

The AMG GT was launched in 2014 and replaced the SLS AMG. It no longer had a naturally-aspirated V8, this time it has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 which made 470 horsepower in its lowest trim. The Black series has just been unveiled for the 2021 model year and it now produces 720 horsepower from its modified flat-plane crank 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8. It can do 0-60 in 3.2 seconds and hits a top speed of 202 mph.

The car now has a completely new bodywork with a lot of aero borrowed from the AMG GT3 racecar. It now has a wider front nose just like the GT3 car, a larger radiator for cooling, more aerodynamic parts for downforce, and a huge double-decker rear wing at the back. It has also received a lot of updates but what on the exterior and interior. The headlights have been completely updated as well as the instrument cluster being completely digital. The car also features the 9 stage traction control system which first debuted in the AMG GTR.

All of these new changes made to the car have helped it to become the fastest road-legal production car in the world at the Nurburgring. It completed the ring with a time of 6 minutes 43.62 seconds. The car is launched in a bright orange color called Magma Beam.

Conclusion:

No one makes cars as mad as Mercedes AMG, and their latest offering is better than ever. Every black series of the past has tried to kill its occupants but also offers extreme fun. The latest GT black series is the most powerful and the most capable car yet. Smashing the Nurburgring lap time for production cars is a testament to the Black series legacy.
