Baby Valkyrie? You might say that. What if you couldn’t afford the crazy more expensively limited Aston Martin Valkyrie. Well, Aston Martin has an answer for you.
The Aston Martin Valhalla is an upcoming mid-engine supercar being made by Aston Martin in collaboration with Red Bull Racing. It is a toned-down version of the Aston Martin Valkyrie but still a very crazy car. We may not be able to afford it but just like any other crazy car, we love to know what it’s all about. And here’s what you need to know about the Aston Martin Valhalla.
When it was first unveiled the car was codenamed AM-RB 003 (Aston Martin Red Bull). It uses many technologies found in the Aston Martin Valkyrie and had the project name “son of Valkyrie”. The car was later called Valhalla which is its official name. Valhalla describes a majestic place in Norse mythology where warriors go when they die in combat.
Valhalla’s engine was supposed to be a 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine with electric motors to make almost 1000hp. But the production version has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine from the Mercedes AMG GT Black Series. AMG has made beastly engines and even with twin turbos they still sound good. Current CEO Tobias Moers was the former boss at Mercedes AMG and Aston’s current relationship with AMG has made this possible. The engine will be reworked by Aston Martin for the Valhalla as well as giving it Aston martin like characteristics. This is nothing new as the DBS Superleggera and new Vantage share AMG engines and have managed to include that distinct Aston martin sound.
In the Valhalla, the engine will make 750hp, combined with 2 electric motors the car produces a total output of 950hp and 737 lb-ft of torque (1000Nm).
The transmission is an 8-speed dual-clutch that sends power to all 4 wheels. This new gearbox sits at the very back of the car for packaging reasons as well as weight distribution. One electric motor sits at the back axle and one sits on the front axle.
It has an electric-only range of 9 miles (15km) and has an electric-only top speed of 80mph (128 km/h). EV mode only engages the front wheels. Using the electric motors also helps eliminate the need for reverse gear as the electric motor can be used to reverse the car.
The interior will change slightly from what was seen in the concept. Seats are still going to be fixed to a carbon tub like A LaFerrari with moveable pedals and steering wheel. Owners who purchase the car from new will have seats tailored to their size. The F1 style sitting position will be present where the occupant’s legs sit a bit above their waist. Proper infotainment will also be available when the car goes into production unlike the phone holder found in the concept.
Many changes have been made compared to the concept but that’s usually the case. The front now has a more wider and recognizable Aston Martin front grill and a much wider front fascia. Headlights have also been enlarged but still sit in front of the wheel arches. The concept had no mirrors but the Production car now has LaFerrari styled mirrors which look great. Supercars have always had unconventional but flashy doors and this comes with forward-hinged dihedral style doors. This door style aids easy entry and exit pus you’ll always look cool getting out of one of those.
The roof scoop and exhaust have been slightly redesigned but remain in their original positions. The rear is identical to the concept with minimal changes. The Valkyrie-style lights still look awesome, they first debuted on the Aston Martin Vulcan. Its rear diffuser is still huge and is a toned-down version of the one found on the Valkyrie.
A lot of inspiration from the Valkyrie is present in this car. The front grill is active and serves as an Aero piece that channels air over the car as well as the cutouts found inside the wheel arches. Down the side, the Aero profile continues with side strakes which Channels air from the wheels. Just before the rear wheels are vortex generators that help direct air away from the rear wheels. The roof has 3 intakes, the middle serves as induction straight to the engine, and the sides feed cold air into the engine bay for cooling. Air vents are just behind these to help heat escape from the engine.
The rear wing is now a conventional active aero piece instead of the flexible carbon part shown in the concept. It would move up and down and act as an air brake to help slow the car down.
Even though it is a toned-down version of the Valkyrie, the rear diffuser is a sight to behold. All these aero parts are going to produce over 600kg (1322 lbs) of downforce at 150mph (240km/h). The car is planned to weigh around 1550kg (3417 lbs) which is fairly light with all the heavy hybrid setup in place.
0-60 mph will be done in 2.5 seconds, with a top speed of 217mph (350km/h). All new tires have been developed for this car paired with carbon ceramic-matrix disc brakes for max stopping power.
Aston Martin is also targeting a Nurburgring lap time of 6 minutes 30 seconds. The Valhalla will have a track mode that will reduce the ride height, maximize downforce and help it achieve that time.
Supercars don’t bother with too many driver aids but the Valhalla will have some extras included. Aids such as Active Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, and a Rear View Camera because the car has no rear window. Lift Systems are now commonplace for low-performance cars and this will have it too.
It was originally limited to just 500 units and would start at $1 million but plans have changed. There’s no exact number but well over 500 cars will be made with a starting price of $800,000. The first cars are set to it the streets in 2024.
Aston martin’s future is very exciting, they’ve never had a mid-engine car. Their first crazy car being the Vulcan showed what Aston could do when the leashes are let loose. The new mid-engine variants have taken this a step further and brought that craziness to the street.
